We rode the bike for more than twenty minutes. We stopped at the edge of a woods, on the other side of the hills. The trees were so thick, I could barely see the hills, but it was enough to make me feel a bit more relaxed. We were away from Jane for now, and I could escape. Ten minutes was all the time my wolf needed.
When I got off the bike, my whole body was numb, my muscles clenching from how tightly Iâd held onto the woman for so long. I looked around and smelled our surroundings, but there was nobody there except for the animals and the blonde woman. She was a Storm witch. Thatâs why I didnât recognize the spell sheâd chanted. The world had yet to get used to Storm spells.
âYou okay?â she asked, her voice soft but the look in her blue eyes sharp as a knife.
âIâm fine,â I said, dusting off my already ruined jeans. âThank you forâ¦you know, taking her out. You really saved my ass.â No point in pretending I could have gotten away when we both knew I wouldnât have.
She gave me a tight-lipped smile. âLetâs get out of the open and weâll talk.â
Oh. That didnât sound very promising. âI actually was thinking of being on my way. That woman isnât the only one after me, and Iâd rather make it back home soon.â Not to mention Amara and Red were on their way. I didnât want to leave them waiting. My wolf agreed.
âI donât think thatâs smart. Sheâs still around here, and if you donât cover your tracks, sheâs going to find you again,â the Storm witch said, her hands on her hips, but I didnât let that fool me. I could smell the guns on her and the knives. She could reach them faster than I could blink.
But she was also right. If Jane found me here, in the middle of nowhere, she could do it again. âAnd how do you suppose I cover my tracks?â
âSpells,â she said with a shrug, as if it had been a stupid question.
âYour spells,â I corrected.
âMine and other spells.â She waved behind her. âMy place isnât far from here. Weâll be safe in there. Nobodyâs going to find us, and then I can help you get on your way.â
Help me. âYou already did.â She nodded. âWhy?â Nobody wanted to just help anybody out of the goodness of their hearts. Itâs just the way the world worked, and I was fine with it.
Pulling her lips inside her mouth, she thought about it for a second. The hesitation was all the confirmation I needed. She definitely wanted something. But what the hell could she want from me?
âI just saved your life out there. I think we both can agree that you owe me a conversation.â Without meeting my eyes, she turned around to walk into the woods on our left. âFollow me. It wonât take long, I promise. You can be on your way soon.â
A trap.
