We rode the bike for more than twenty minutes. We stopped at the edge of a woods, on the other side of the hills. The trees were so thick, I could barely see the hills, but it was enough to make me feel a bit more relaxed. We were away from Jane for now, and I could escape. Ten minutes was all the time my wolf needed.

When I got off the bike, my whole body was numb, my muscles clenching from how tightly I’d held onto the woman for so long. I looked around and smelled our surroundings, but there was nobody there except for the animals and the blonde woman. She was a Storm witch. That’s why I didn’t recognize the spell she’d chanted. The world had yet to get used to Storm spells.

“You okay?” she asked, her voice soft but the look in her blue eyes sharp as a knife.

“I’m fine,” I said, dusting off my already ruined jeans. “Thank you for…you know, taking her out. You really saved my ass.” No point in pretending I could have gotten away when we both knew I wouldn’t have.

She gave me a tight-lipped smile. “Let’s get out of the open and we’ll talk.”

Oh. That didn’t sound very promising. “I actually was thinking of being on my way. That woman isn’t the only one after me, and I’d rather make it back home soon.” Not to mention Amara and Red were on their way. I didn’t want to leave them waiting. My wolf agreed.

“I don’t think that’s smart. She’s still around here, and if you don’t cover your tracks, she’s going to find you again,” the Storm witch said, her hands on her hips, but I didn’t let that fool me. I could smell the guns on her and the knives. She could reach them faster than I could blink.

But she was also right. If Jane found me here, in the middle of nowhere, she could do it again. “And how do you suppose I cover my tracks?”

“Spells,” she said with a shrug, as if it had been a stupid question.

“Your spells,” I corrected.

“Mine and other spells.” She waved behind her. “My place isn’t far from here. We’ll be safe in there. Nobody’s going to find us, and then I can help you get on your way.”

Help me. “You already did.” She nodded. “Why?” Nobody wanted to just help anybody out of the goodness of their hearts. It’s just the way the world worked, and I was fine with it.

Pulling her lips inside her mouth, she thought about it for a second. The hesitation was all the confirmation I needed. She definitely wanted something. But what the hell could she want from me?

“I just saved your life out there. I think we both can agree that you owe me a conversation.” Without meeting my eyes, she turned around to walk into the woods on our left. “Follow me. It won’t take long, I promise. You can be on your way soon.”

A trap.
